Looking back at Bologna
21st International ILIAS Conference on 8 and 9 September 2022
After two virtual editions, the 2022 ILIAS conference took place again as a face-to-face event at 8 and 9 September in Bologna, the city with the oldest university in Europe. The conference motto 2022 was:
diverse – innovative – secure
The venue in Bologna was the FICO Congress Center. The 21st ILIAS Conference has been organised by the Italian ILIAS service provider OC Open Consulting srl in collaboration with the ILIAS open source e-Learning e.V.

Back to the Future
The last two and a half years have seen a previously unimagined hype around digital work and education. A lot of this revolves around the concept of ‘New Work’, at the heart of which lie teaching and learning, which, thanks to this intense spotlight, also now have the opportunity to redefine themselves.
But how should the future of this new world of digital freedom and learning look? Which of the sometimes rather hasty approaches of the recent past should be developed further in the future, and which digital solutions have not proved effective?
How do businesses, organisations, schools and institutions of higher education solve the new challenges? How can we implement and combine compulsory learning, meaningful, work-oriented and life-phase oriented learning? And what role do digital sovereignty and security play?
Presentations and workdhops will spread fresh impulses when it comes to using ILIAS and new forms of learning and learning technologies. They show us approaches and ideas, for example hybrid sceanarios, technical solutions and tools, and the use of media and didactic methods.
Diversity Management – ILIAS for Everyone
Diversity is opportunity: ‘Diversity’ is, along with ‘New Work’, the other big topic on everyone’s lips nowadays.
What are the challenges facing teaching and learning, vocational training and further education when it comes to diversity? The same learning media are meant to address and appeal to a wide range of different user groups, and at the same time, barriers, prejudice and injustice should be eliminated, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience of using digital learning opportunities.
Diversity also means treating each individual’s education as just that – individual. This diversity needs to be structured and organised.
Ideas and experiences will be presented on how successful diversity management can be achieved with ILIAS, what approaches have been found and what opportunities are seen.
How-to … Multipliers – Your ILIAS Needs You
Everyone has had one of those epiphanies – you know the ones – they usually start with ‘Ahhh!’ and then proceed with a ‘that’s how that works!’ or ‘you can achieve A using B!’ or ‘so that’s what that is for!’
One of the strengths of ILIAS is the sheer amount of different things you can do with it. ILIAS can be used for a wide range of usage scenarios, is suitable for a whole variety of different types of users and training formats, and its look can be adapted to diverse design needs.
We are looking for simple solutions, cruelly-underestimated tools, clever usage misappropriations, little ‘helping hands’, tricks to show off with, ingenious effects: small effort – large effect, simple production processes, attractive teaching and learning scenarios or tips that every user of ILIAS just has to know about!
We look forward to solutions and recipes from the ILIAS community and will see how they work and how they can be used.
Wild Card
What is shown in these presentations and workshops is what ILIAS users have always wanted to tell us about. Be it innovative, new tools or a prototype or a new trend or research contribution.
Let's be surprised!
- Practical Application Review: A contribution focusing on practical experience in the use or development of tools/use of methods/etc... The contribution should start with a theoretical part and then move on to either a ‘show and tell’ or to working through a specific example of the practical application of the tool/method etc. The results of the session will be included in the overall conference report. Submissions from heterogeneous teams such as companies and educational institutions are also possible.
- Prototype and Product Close-Up: Here we are looking for contributions that describe and present innovative new tools that can be shown as working prototypes or finished products. After a brief theoretical introduction, the room should then turn into a hands-on demonstration lab, in which the (future) users will be able to try out your prototype/product and give feedback.
- Workshop: Workshops will be spaces in which we can take stock and exchange information on particular conference topics. Together with the participants, you will work on the conference topic in question and record a result. The active involvement of the participants is the important thing here. Workshops should not be a collection of lectures, but rather an open space for discussions and other forms of active participation. The results of the workshops will be published. For example you could do something like the following: Workshops With a Scientific Focus (a discussion about the preliminary results of research into current, but not yet widely established trends, input + discussion + further development); Idea Workshops (presentation of an idea with subsequent discussion/exchange of ideas between the participants and the joint further development of the idea) or Project Workshops (Discussion and comparison of [interim] results from projects, exchange of experience/knowledge, solutions to a concrete question).
- ‘How-To’ Tutorial: A ‘How-To’ tutorial should give a comprehensive overview of a thematically self-contained subject area, method or tool. A good tutorial should be educational and not just be a brief overview. Tutorials should also be combined with practical exercises (hands-on experience) and should be of sufficient relevance and importance to capture the interest of the audience.
For the first time, the conference programme was composed by a programme committee made up of members of the ILIAS community. Together with representatives of the organiser OC Open Consulting and the ILIAS association, the programme committee also formed the jury for the call for papers. The members of the committee are:
- Claudia Glander, CaT Concepts and Training GmbH
- Katharina Riebe, Hochschule Bremen
- Jeanette Kristin Weichler, ISE Fraunhofer
- Karin Wessels, CaT Concepts and Training GmbH

ILIAS as part of the digitalisation strategy of the South Tyrolean provincial administration
Demo von Günter Sölva & Stefan Kontschieder, Südtiroler Landesverwaltung - Amt für Personalentwicklung
The challenges and successes on the path of ILIAS as an integrated part of the digitization strategy of the South Tyrolean provincial administration are shown - specifically using the example of the automated filing of participation confirmations in the digital personnel file.
The South Tyrolean regional administration (Autonomous Province of Bolzano) has been operating the learning portal www.copernicus.bz.it since 2004. With the update to ILIAS 6, new development steps were taken.
The demo provides an insight into ILIAS as part of the digitization strategy of the South Tyrolean provincial administration and, in particular, into the process of connecting ILIAS to the digital South Tyrolean citizen network via various interfaces. As a result, since the end of 2021 it has been possible, for example, to file participation confirmations for all employees in the provincial administration directly and immediately in their digital personnel files. The participation confirmations can now be retrieved digitally using the electronic identity card EIK (CIE in Italian), among other things, and remain there even if someone changes jobs, for example.

Efficiently map compulsory training with ILIAS
Demo von Bernd Rumphorst, LVM Versicherung und Claudia Glander, CaT Concepts and Training GmbH
The demo presentation shows how mandatory instructions can be efficiently mapped with the ILIAS study program.
For companies, the first challenge in organizing in-house training is often the regular implementation, monitoring and verification of mandatory training. Paper and pen or Excel can help, but the overview is quickly lost as the number of employees grows and new mandatory training courses are added. Invitations, registrations and documentation on paper mean a great deal of organizational effort. Can digitization of the process help here?
LVM Versicherung from Münster can answer this question in the affirmative. Through the introduction of the ILIAS-based system cate together with CaT Concepts and Training GmbH and the use of the ILIAS study program, the effort for mandatory instructions could be reduced to a minimum in a short time. Employees are reminded by the system cyclically by mail to complete or renew their mandatory training. The results are documented in a digital education biography for employees and managers.
This not only pleases the organizers and those responsible, but also the learners, who are presented with the necessary information in an appealing interface.
Transparentes Koppeln von Plattformen

Transparent coupling of platforms
Do you operate several ILIAS platforms at your institution or in your cooperation network and have always wanted to send users, courses and other learning resources from one ILIAS or Moodle to another? But you didn't know how? Don't worry, ILIAS 8 and higher will help you!
ILIAS has long offered the possibility to share content such as courses, learning modules and tests between platforms with the help of ECS. However, there have been some limiting factors that have made the use of this coupling method difficult or not effective - especially when two platforms within the same institution or within a trusting federation of platforms should be connected. A fundamental problem was that, until now, when users were transferred via the ECS, local user accounts were always created on the target platform. Access to the shared resources was thus only ever possible via a detour through the user's own platform; the account on the target platform received no e-mails and came virtually out of nowhere. While this was problem-free or even the desired behavior for many scenarios, it was at the same time a major stumbling block in other contexts, not least due to the emergence of authentication methods such as Shibboleth or OpenID Connect. Especially in a mesh of different interconnected platforms, the many independent local accounts posed a major problem.
The ECS connector in ILIAS has now been extended to allow transparent passing of user identities between connected platforms - users thus have the same identity on both platforms even after passing on via ECS and can also log in to both platforms. This article shows which possibilities the ECS connector offers and discusses them with different coupling scenarios from the EPICUR network, the Eucor network and within the University of Freiburg.

ILIAS is an extremely flexible LMS platform that can be adapted to the needs of companies and universities. However, for newbies it could be complex or even disorienting.
The aim of this presentation is to provide an overview of ILIAS explained in a "simple way" and, together with you and your questions, understand the main settings and build a course using ILIAS LMS internal authoring.

ILIAS Marketplace
Practical Application Review by Ilario Truppa, OC Open Consulting s.r.l.
- Avere direttemente in ILIAS un servizio on-demand di acquisto di Corsi già pronti all’uso, acquistandoli dai migliori cataloghi online;
- Risolvere il problema delle aziende utilizzatrici di ILIAS di dover acquistare i Corsi da importare, spesso ad un prezzo eccessivo rispetto al numero di utenti che fruiranno di quel Corso. In “ILIAS Marketplace” sarà possibile acquistare un numero di licenze adatto agli utenti da formare;
- Risolvere il problema della “perdita di controllo” da parte dei fornitori dei Corsi off-the-shelf che, una volta consegnati ai Clienti, possono essere utilizzati e/o caricati in piattaforme diverse da quella concordate. I contenuti dei fornitori resteranno infatti sulle rispettive piattaforme, garantendone la proprietà e l’aggiornamento;

How to design a gamified self-study scenario in ILIAS
Tutorial von Dorthe Hutz-Nierhoff & Rob Falkenstein, Universität Freiburg
With this tutorial we would like to help participants design a gamified self-study scenario in ILIAS, using gamification elements such as “unlockable content” and badges awarded at different levels.
It is known from a variety of empirical studies on the impact of gamification on learning and instruction that the use of game-based elements has several major gainful effects. Among these are, for instance, an increase in student motivation and engagement as well as improved orientation in the learning process.
With these potentially gainful effects in mind, several game-based elements were integrated into the learning design of “PerForm – Bioeconomy and Society”, a SPOC (small private online course) with a guided microlearning approach piloted by the EPICUR European University Alliance.
Implementing the concept of progressive unlocking of “learning nuggets” as well as awarding badges at different levels in ILIAS requires knowledge and skills of mechanics tied to functions such as learning progress, availability, badges and the ILIAS page editor.
In this How to?! session participants will learn how to practically apply these mechanics on the basis of a pre-designed example taken from the setting described above. Practical tips for an advanced use of the page editor to clearly design and present learning nuggets (e.g. “manual” tiles, column layout, embedded item groups) will be provided as needed.

Applied Bridge: the solution addressed to ILIAS platform administrators and tutors for an autonomous, segregated and time saving accounting management of the platform
Practical Application Review by Caterina Castellani, APPLIED s.r.l.
This presentation shows and tells an integration between ILIAS and SAP Success Factors (or other talent management systems).
Within the digital transformation services provided by Applied towards significant companies and cross industries companies which are users of ILIAS LMS, we recognized an urgent need within the accounting management activities of the platform and affected by the following context of reference and major drivers:
- Covid-19 effects on companies’ business process management
- Needs of reskilling and upskilling due to digital transformation
- Increasing use of remote learning for a more and more extensive audience.
The above macro trends let Human Resources and Education departments dealing with new types and needs of works:
- The new management activities due to the adoption of ILIAS LMS
- Need for cross platform reporting between ILIAS LMS datas and talent management systems (as pe SAP Success Factors)
- Need to enroll a significant number of users in e-learning courses and to report learning progress results in the talent management
As for the understanding of the above, Applied entirely developed an accounting system designed for the efficiency of activities performed by the administrators or tutors of ILIAS LMS. This accounting system is merely a middleware which can be customized accordingly to talent management systems adopted by the companies. The major functionalities allowed by the Applied Bridge are:
- Automatic synchronization of personal master data concerning the users who are required to attend ILIAS LM courses
- Automatic registration of participants in ILIAS LMS contents through the upload of files generated by the talent management system
- Automatic export of learning progress through format files ready to directly upload in the talent management system
- Creation of several roles with different permissions accordingly to operating flow chosen by the company (pe: a group HR department as general administrator with visibility on the total range of ILIAS contents and users list; HR manager of local subsidiaries as local administrator with limited visibility on ILIAS contents and users list)
- Time validity settings of courses activation
- Update of subscriptions features
- Users list view per content presented in ILIAS LMS
- User details view customized as for company’s needs.
Finally, the Applied bridge is applicable to both public and private institutions, and we would be honoured to join ILIAS Conference presenting our paper through a practice case experience based on a “show & tell” approach.
Training e automazione: composizione semi automatica di contenuti formativi

Practical Application Review [it]
Training and automation: semi-automated composition of training content
Practical Application Review by Martina Solimini, IMA
Demonstrate the ability to create draft training content automatically from a product BOM.
IMA is an international company specializing in the production of automatic machines for packaging pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, tobacco, tea and coffee. The machines have a logical and physical structure, called a bill of materials, which is defined at the design stage and used for production and maintenance. The machines that IMA designs and assembles almost handcrafted for its customers involve a complexity of process, operation, and maintenance that can only be shared with end users with appropriate field training.
How do you enable IMA to transmit its know-how to clients? How do you digitize a process that can no longer be supported by paper and unstructured material? How do you synchronize this flow with machine delivery? In my talk, I will discuss how IMA has developed a process for producing and sharing training with its customers, making the system central to automating content writing within the ILIAS platform, namely MIXER.
The Mixer, informally called a "blender," is a system that can communicate with ILIAS and semi-automatically compose courses according to certain structures that represent the storyboard. Composition is done by aggregating Media Pool objects previously stored by the editor within the LMS.
The aggregation logic is currently defined by the compilation of an xls file, in which the machine bill of materials or instruction manual structure is given, and each group is associated with a specific content. Our machines have a modular structure, that is, they are made up of functional groups that can be reused for subsequent productions. Consequently, why produce an already existing and reusable training content several times? Through the opportunity to associate a content with a functional group, it is possible to automatically aggregate training content based on the machine structure.
From this input, which is effectively the course storyboard, the Mixer is able to produce an xml analogous to the one packaged in ILIAS, which can be imported and synchronized with the content actually present in the LMS. The result is to have a course reduce the editing work by at least 70 percent.
Central to this process was the flexibility and scalability of ILIAS, as Open Source software, predisposed to co-working by multiple companies contributing to the development of an integrated system.
The tangible benefits are major time and cost savings in producing and updating content, with the ability to reuse information already produced in other enterprise systems. An even more ambitious goal will be to connect ILIAS directly to other enterprise software via the Mixer. In this way, starting from the bill of materials processed with design systems, transmitted and finalized in ERP and CMS systems, it will be possible in a semi-automatic way to package customized Training content to machine matrix.
This flow fits within a landscape that encompasses not only the production of content, but all the complexity of how to prepare it for our customers, who are faced with ever-increasing production needs due to the connectivity and industry requirements in which they operate.
In this talk, I will try to emphasize how this whole ecosystem came about, the integration between ILIAS and the Mixer, and the provision of content to clients.

From ILIAS to ILAIS
Demo von Göran Kattenberg, Future Learning
In this demo presentation we will show the practical contribution of Artificial Intelligence to ILIAS. And how ILIAS can transform into ILAIS: Intelligent Learning AI System
Artificial Intelligence is a buzzword on everybody's agenda nowadays. Yet it is a concept from the 50's and 60's introduced by Martin Minsky, Seymour Papert and John McCarthy. He was a mathematician, trying to figure out the human brain. Hence the concept of Artificial Intelligence and how it could be put into practice. E.g. via Perceptrons, which is now called Machine Learning via Nearal Networks. Computers are much more powerful 70 years later and AI becomes a useful tool. I met Marvin Minsky once at a conference of the American Educational Research Association in Chicago. It inspired me to dedicate my own work and research to the constructive added value of computing to education and educational research. I used it for gathering data, analyzing data and creating diagnostic and remediating tools for learning. In the meantime all kinds of educational tools and technologies have been developed such as ILIAS. A system for Information sharing, Learning and Collaboration. an LMS or Learning Management System. Including a Learning Content Management System which is a very strong feature of the ILIAS system and in my opinion a Unique Selling Point. Not every Learning Management System has a multi-language repository and built-in content and knowledge creation tools. A fine-grained asset management included, also support multiple language and a document management system that supports versioning. And also support for metadata and taxonomy.
The issue here is that creating and managing the knowledge repository or central core of truth for an organization can be become a very cumbersome, A process called content curation. Multiple languages, multiple versions, multiple assets, multiple audiences, multiple skill levels. personalization, recommendations based on individual progress and analytics. These are all promises made through the recent addition of new technologies and standards to ILIAS such as Experience API, CMI-5, Competency Frameworks. Also, new technologies are on the horizon and gradually added to ILIAS, such as H5P for interactive content, Integration with other systems that allow e.g. Blockchain exchange of learning data towards and from the European Skills and Competency Framework ESCO.
However, the actual content curation process and knowledge capture process is still very much a manual process. In this Demo presentation i will show how Artificial Intelligence can help here and allow for bulk knowledge creation from legacy sources such as documents, ,presentations, videos capture such as lectures and other video content directly in to the repository. But now in a "smart" way that allows for adding concept metadata and taxonomy, versioning, and asset creation such as automated creation of questions that can be reused in ILIAS towards tests and assessment. It is of the utmost importance that the questions are of a high quality standard within the specific knowledge domain and also contain appropriate distractors. These questions and other interactions can be used and reused both for informal and formal pujrposes and can also be used to provide competency pretests and post-tests to support useful learning analytics.
Current Artificial Intelligence technology allows for extracting relevant concepts and topics in a multidimensional concept space (768 dimensions in the most recent versions of AGI). From legacy content these concepts can be extracted and including in "smart" content. Content becomes a dynamic knowledge resource that can be repurposed towards various delivery mechanisms and formats. Also it can be used for translation into multiple languages retaining the original conceptual quality of the source language and with the ability to regenerated updated content and knowledge. Also, AI allows for generating voiceovers or podcasts in a very high quality. Or, it is can be used to leverage the repository to performance support use cases such as using Voice interfaces (Alexa a.s.o).

Achieve and measure learning progress in 3D/VR SCORM learning modules
Demo von Sebastian van Loo, Databay AG
The article shows interactive 3D/VR learning modules in which the learner has to perform various tasks. As part of the fulfilment of various tasks, task-specific learning levels are achieved, which can be easily saved in ILIAS via the SCORM interface. The SCORM learning module is passed by solving all or a specific combination of tasks by the learner from the 3D/VR environment.
Learning real physical actions, procedures and hand movements is regularly a fundamental and important learning objective. In eLearning, a 3D/VR learning environment therefore provides a valuable complementary learning experience because it can effectively improve the learner's action-related competence compared to conventional learning modules.
Once a 3D/VR SCORM learning module has been created (e.g. with Unity or Aframe), the interface transfers the learning statuses reliably and persistently. The interface works with a ScormLibrary, which considerably facilitates communication between the learning module and ILIAS.
The article presents useful application scenarios and practical examples and discusses functional and organisational challenges that need to be overcome in a 3D VR learning environment.

Good Morning, ILIAS
Prototype and Product Close-Up by Ingo Jackisch, Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg (DHBW)
I would like to show the possibilities of the new ILIAS feature for role-specific starting points.
Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg uses ILIAS (among other things) in the context of study preparation. In this context, the Dashboard (fka Personal Desktop) is not always the best choice as a starting point. Apart from the Favourites and the Recommended Content, there are only a few design options for placing information directly on the desk. It is difficult to make clear from the first use which of the objects on the desk contain the most important first elements.
With ILIAS 7 there is now the possibility to assign different starting points to the holders of global roles. In our case, we use this to assign users a customised "starting course", which is displayed directly after login. Here, the respective supervisors can place target group-oriented offers and reduce barriers to entry through a suitable course design.
In our scenario, the users come from several study academies and receive a locally adapted course. However, it is also conceivable to offer start-up courses specific to a faculty or degree programme, or even illustrations of corporate organisations. The approach can also be used to break down barriers.
The current implementation in our ILIAS platform and the experiences gained up to the conference will be presented. In addition, the idea of giving users the choice of switching to the desk as a starting point will be presented.
Predicting key learning outcomes with Reporting & Analytics for the ILIAS LMS

Predicting key learning outcomes with Reporting & Analytics for the ILIAS LMS
Practical Application Review by Mariana Robson, Intelliboard Inc.
Show organizational and educational approaches in the access of ILIAS data that expands the application of actionable insights.
Institutions such as corporations and universities/colleges need advanced data insights. Corporate training departments specializing in “high stakes” training (health and safety regulations, for-profit training courses, onboarding, or client training) need access to data that will directly and indirectly impact ROI. Colleges and universities need access to data that will impact retention, course, instructor, and student success. These data points can come from a wide variety of sources: the learning management system (LMS), individual tools used within a particular LMS platform, or even spreadsheets with data managed by specific individuals. IntelliBoard addresses the primary success factors for corporatations and institutions with access to data and resulting actions/responses to that data, also known as actionable data. Actionable data can be predictive: Integrating with leading-edge machine learning to analyze historical ILIAS data and predict future learning outcomes.

Iraqi eLearning Portal as a unique solution …
Prototype and Product Close-Up by Lyubomir Bistrekov, NATO DEEP eAcademy
To familiarize the conference participants with the Iraqi eLearning Portal (IeLP) as unique solution – LMS ILIAS fully operational in Arabic. Also sharing lessons learned from the ADL capacity building programme for the Iraqi Higher Military Education System (HMES) conducted by NATO Mission Iraq and NATO DEEP eAcademy.
NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) and NATO DEEP eAcademy have been working together to produce a viable solution to allow the Iraqis to access e-learning content. As the result, the customization process of the Iraqi e-Learning Portal (IeLP) was conducted. The interface in Arabic is fully available.
A unique solution was introduced, based on LMS ILIAS 7.2 framework. The point is, that this platform does not fully support the Arabic version and when switching to this language (Right to Left Language – RTL), it mirrors the entire platform. On the other hand – using the Arabic version only is not a problem but maintaining/ operating the multilingual LMS ILIAS option is demanding and requires the implementation of dedicated solutions.
- Firstly – separate the Arabic and English versions from each other on the platform. As a result, two autonomous areas are kept.
- Secondly – create and attribute dedicated roles and authorization groups for users using different language versions.
- Thirdly – prepare mirror images for graphics in the Arabic version.
- Fourthly – create a separate login screen for the Arabic version.
Since the standard language package within LMS ILIAS offers only about 50% of translated phrases in Arabic, during the customization process, the remaining language portion was also translated.
The IeLP is at full operating capacity and Iraqis are beginning to access it for learning.
There have been two major areas that the Iraqis have started to use the Portal: (1) NMI assisted the Iraqi Defence University with the running of an Executive Leadership Workshop held at the end of January. This has included an e-package containing pre and further reading which, when combined with the content from the lectures, had given the participants the required knowledge to successfully answer the questions in the syndicate discussions. The participants from this course were Brigadier General and above and had been introduced to what e-learning can achieve. (2) A new NCO Leadership course has been developed between NMI and the instructors from the Elite NCO School. A dedicated page has been set up which contains the contents of the lessons and further notes. This will allow both the instructors and students access to reading material, PowerPoints, and lesson plans to help them prepare for upcoming lessons.
On the 19th of January 2022, during an official meeting between the NMI leadership and General Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah, the Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Armed Forces was very positive about IeLP. He expressed the will to benefit from it at all military institutes and beyond. The meeting dealt with a discussion concerning the progress of the projects submitted by the NMI that aim to raise the capabilities of the Iraqi Armed Forces, and options for developing the Mission’s level of work in the country.

More engagement in ILIAS – realizing amazing micro-interactions

Tutorial [de]
More engagement in ILIAS – realizing amazing micro-interactions
Tutorial von Christopher Könitz, Hochschule Wismar
I would like to show how to create micro-interactions with basic ILIAS-elements to create better learning experiences.
Why micro-interactions? Micro-interactions are small graphical elements that are helping to support the motivational design and are therefore preferable. Users get instant feedback for their actions and are motivated to interact with the learning content. So, these elements supporting learning goals and create an interactive user experience.
The reality in ILIAS : Most courses in ILIAS are static. If users are looking at a course, they just see files, tests-objects or static graphics for example. Some courses use the availability-feature to implement learning paths. But the interface is still static. As a result, the lacking of micro-interactions lowers the level of motivation because the learning interface keeps the same.
The Solution : To solve this problem, I’ve developed a more interactive and graphical approach with basic ILIAS-Elements to realize micro-interactions. So, users are more engaged for further learning-interactions. In my session I will explain the basic interaction concepts and show how to create two micro-interactions:
- First, an interactive button as a simple micro-interaction.
- Second, a method to replace graphical elements to show individual learning progresses to the users.
Both micro-interactions will be created and demonstrated live. I will also provide templates for download for an easy adaptation and implementation.

KitchenWhat?

- Corporate was?
- Was ist perspektivisch im Bereich Corporate Learning geplant?
- Didaktisches Template oder doch Lernpfad?

GO, ILIAS! – Getting ready (to upgrade) for trending learning scenarios: challenge-based, collaborative, agile
Workshop von Dorthe Hutz-Nierhoff & Barbara Müller, Universität Freiburg
This workshop aims at jointly exploring must-haves, should-haves and nice-to-haves for supporting trending learning scenarios with ILIAS from a didactic perspective.
The future is now! Driven by the pandemic, not only has digitalization in teaching and learning experienced a considerable boost, long-time didactic desiderata for student-centered, competence-oriented and collaborative learning are increasingly finding their way into strategic considerations for future university education.
Is ILIAS well-equipped to meet the demands of these scenarios? What will it take to truly support the shift from teaching to learning and to provide for a seamless virtual learning environment that is safe and attractive to use for target audiences in higher education and professional development.
Laying the foundation for a hopefully fruitful outcome of the workshop the workshop hosts will provide a didactic impulse as well as up-to-date examples of challenge-based, collaborative learning scenarios piloted by EPICUR European University, self-organised study groups at the University of Freiburg and a self-study scenario from Advanced Continuing Studies.
The workshop participants will be invited to actively contribute to discussing, defining and prioritizing future features of ILIAS required to implement similar (or other) didactic scenarios. Corresponding feature requests will eventually be drafted and forwarded to the ILIAS Community as a basis for future development considerations to make ILIAS quantum-leap forward.

Leichte Sprache, gerechte Sprache, alles zusammen? - Barrierefreie Kommunikation

Easy language, fair language, all of the above? - Accessible communication
Prototype and Product Close-Up by Kendra Grotz, Fachhochschule Dortmund
With this practical contribution, I would like to elaborate on the linguistic perspective of accessibility in and for ILIAS. With regard to the issue at hand, it will be interesting to see what linguistics and technical communication have to offer.
The sub-project Inclusive Language and Accessibility within the project ILIAS.nrw works vigorously and successfully towards a more inclusive ILIAS: We systematically remove language barriers on a regular basis.
Our ultimate goal is a textual user interface speaking to everyone: to people of different genders, concentration spans, skill sets and linguistic backgrounds. Our approach to language is both critical and creative.
What do we have to be mindful of in this process? What conflicts of interest are there - and how do we solve them, how do others?
Fortunately, we can learn a thing or two from helpful rules and practices: We will take a look at easy language, controlled languages and translation-optimised writing.
You will discover the power of understandability and how to create it.

Anybody home, McFly? – About accessibility today, back then, and tomorrow
Practical Application Review by Wolfgang Schmidt-Sielex, Fachhochschule Dortmund
A comparison about digital accessibility on the web: yesterday, today, and in the near future. Additionally we will see concepts and procedures which the ILIAS community uses today to improve accessibility. This includes, among other things, how accessibility is integrated into the development process and how people identify and remove existing digital barriers.
Accessibility isn't the new "hot shit" that has been annoying Internet communities and their maintainers for just a couple of the latest CMS and LMS versions, and it is not an invention of governments who arbitrarily create new laws. For decades accessibility is a concept that has been integrated into the World Wide Web since the beginning, but has often met only with moderate enthusiasm by website developers.
What was it like, back then? How did you go about making your own website available to as many people as possible without any problems? Why do we still discover similar usability problems in web interfaces today, which require the same kind of problem solving as in the "Web 1.0" of the 90's? And how exactly do we meet the challenges today, especially in ILIAS and in a web that has become significantly more complex, in order to create solutions for everyone?
We get an insight into procedures and tools with which the ILIAS community makes their LMS more usable for everyone. We learn what digital barriers are, how we detect them, and how we can actively participate in improving ILIAS. The practical article offers a look back and a look into the future: ILIAS was great, ILIAS is awesome, ILIAS is going to be phenomenal!

How the sausage gets made: Contribute to ILIAS Development
Practical Application Review by Richard Klees, Technical Board des ILIAS-Vereins
The participants will get to know various possibilities to contribute and participate in the development of ILIAS, especially those for non-coders.
ILIAS is a free and open soure software that claims to be developed in an open and community driven process. In fact, this is built into the very core of FOSS: You, the user, can become the creator, the director of the software that you use.
The reality is a lot more complex: How is the development in a huge community organized? When, where and how are decisions made and who is responsible? How does the community agree on priorities and resource usage? How can I contribute? What is the relation between the ILIAS Society, service providers, maintainers, the product manager, the Technical Board and all the other groups and comitees in the ILIAS society? Can or should I become a member in these groups? And, isn’t software development something for programmers only, after all?
This tutorial session will show possibilities for everyone to participate in the maintenance and development of ILIAS. In the presentation of the possibilites, we will meet various comittees, groups and tools. The participants in the workshop will have a lot of time to ask questions and give inputs, so the participation will already start in this very slot.

Practical Application Review by Paola Lorenzi, Paola Lorenzi Life&Business Coach

Apply Natural Language Processing to build interactive H5P learning activities at scale!
Practical Application Review by Philippe Decottignies & Nejma Belkhdim, Neuronys France
Research proves that active learning results in more engagement and a higher retention rate among trainees. However, for trainers, creating active learning materials is both difficult and time-consuming. We will demonstrate how to create them faster with Nolej.
We use state-of-the-art artificial intelligence to analyze your static learning materials and apply the theories from neuroscience and cognitive psychology to generate engaging interactive H5P learning activities. Within minutes, NOLEJ enhances raw course materials with additional concepts, summarizes key parts of the course, and generates a large set of questions and flashcards. NOLEJ even turns passive videos into more engaging H5P interactive videos. NOLEJ is so intuitive and easy to use that even your best students or expert employees could become course authors and extend your eLearning catalog at a fraction of the cost.
NOLEJ automatically generates:
- H5P interactive books,
- H5P interactive videos,
- H5P interactive games (Crossword, Drag The Word, Find The Word),
- H5P interactive assessments (question set with MCQ, True/False, Fill The Blank).
All these interactive learning activities can be:
- uploaded to ILIAS platform via SCORM or H5P,
- embedded on your website with one line of HTML code,
- executed from suppor LTI 1.3.
During this talk, before demonstrating NOLEJ, we will first introduce what is Natural Language Processing (NLP), how it works nowadays with deep neural networks, how it could be applied to automate the course creation, how it could be combined with neuroscience and cognitive psychology to improve the course efficiency for the learner, how to keep the teacher in the loop while saving his/her precious time…

Hybrid and enhanced classroom with Experience API
Practical Application Review by Nicola Mastrolilli, Cartesiani
Dissemination of knowledge about the standard
First part
The slow but unstoppable march of the new Experience API standard continues. Some adoption data, some news about new xAPI Learning Record Providers and new features of the xAPI Authoring Tool.
The xAPI Profile Server and version 2.0 of the specification are scheduled to be released later this year (editor's note: both elements should be officially released by the ILIAS conference, and the information gathered in the working groups is sufficient for this part in any case).
Part Two
One of the consequences of the pandemic-lockdown combination was the impact on corporate training, which inevitably had to change. Today, there is an increasing need to redesign training in distance learning or at least in hybrid mode.
The latter option is the most difficult, but perhaps it really is the most effective solution.
Experience API can help companies and trainers design and deliver highly effective blended and/or hybrid training programs.
Some practical approaches to designing hybrid classrooms and using xAPI before, during, and after class will be highlighted.
Third part
WimmelxAPI. Through a simple game with pictures from the famous Wimmel book, the audience is made to playfully explore the design of xAPI statements.
The game, of course, allows everyone to participate, even those who are not familiar with the specification. For this very reason, it can be an excellent tool for spreading knowledge about this standard.
