The annual ILIAS Conference takes place since 2002. It is the most important user meeting of the international ILIAS LMS community. Below you find more information about each conference and links to the conference pages.

15th International ILIAS Conference : Utrecht : September 09 and 09, 2016

The 15th International ILIAS Conference took place at September 08 and 09, 2016 in Utrecht. The conference was hosted by the Centre of Expertise E-Learning of the Dutch Army.


Main topics of the 2016 conference were:


  • Acknowledging  learning activities and competences
  • Motivating high levels of interaction and communication
  • Linking systems and applications
  • E-Learning in the classroom
  • Learning in 2020


Keynote speakers had been Wilfred Rubens and Paul Thurkettle.

14th ILIAS Conference : Dortmund : September 09 and 10, 2015

The 14th International ILIAS conference took place at September 09 and 10, 2015 in Dortmund and was hosted by the University of Applied Sciences Dortmund.

12th ILIAS Conference : Munich : 29 and 30 August 2013

Keep on Moving • Keep on Learning


The 12thInternational ILIAS conference took place at August 29 and 30, 2013 in Munich and was hosted by Hochschule Fresenius and ILIAS open source e-Learning e.V. Major topics of the conference were:


  • Successfully using ILIAS tools for educational purposes – reports on experiences using particular ILIAS functions in e-learning based courses etc.
  • Basic and further training in the healthcare sector – presentation of how the special challenges of basic and further education in the medical, therapeutic and care sectors are dealt with, and how ILIAS can be used to find solutions to these challenges
  • E-Learning and human resource development – contributions relating to skills management, testing skills, certificates of qualification and the the teaching of soft skills.
  • Natural sciences in virtual training –possibilities of ILIAS to create teaching and learning opportunities in the natural sciences and what challenges are there still to be solved
  • ILIAS international - reports based on experience of ILIAS being used internationally, and in ideas on how to better support people learning and cooperating when using different languages on one ILIAS installation.

9. ILIAS Conference : Dortmund : 23 - 24 September 2010

The 2010 ILIAS Conference was hosted by Fachhochschule Dortmund and took place at September 23 and 24, 2010.

8. ILIAS Conference : Budapest : 12 - 13 November 2009

In 2009, the ILIAS Conference took place in Budapest and was hosted by Hungary's famous private university for applied sciences Dennis Gabor Applied University (DGAU) in Budapest (Hungary)


Main topics of the conference were:


  • ILIAS 4
  • Best practice for using ILIAS in e-learning
  • Content creation and re-use, incl. SCORM 2004, content creation with OpenOffice plug-in eLAIX, and Open Educational Resources
  • Quality management
  • Online assessment


Keynotes speakers were Carl Holmberg and Zoltán Szegedy-Maszák.

7. ILIAS Conference : Hamburg : 9 - 10 September 2008

In 2008, the ILIAS conference returned back to Helmut Schmidt Universität Hamburg where it took place as part of the Fernausbildungskongress of the Federal Armed Forces. Major topics were assessment, new ways for content production, models for organising e-learning and integration of ILIAS in IT infrastructures. A special focus was set on the use of ILIAS in military education.

6. ILIAS Conference : Bozen : 4 - 5 October 2007

The conference was hosted by Autonome Provinz Bozen - Südtirol, Italy.

5. ILIAS Conference : Göttingen : 28 September 2006

The 2006 conference was part of the Source Talk Tage at Georg August-Universität Göttingen. Main topics were adaptiv learning and connecting ILIAS with other systems such as management systems or virtual classrooms.

4. ILIAS Conference : Nürnberg : 6 - 7 October 2005

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg hosted the 2005 conference that focused on how to implement eLearning strategies in schools, higher education, and business, on how to customise ILIAS to the needs of different target groups and on ways to create content.

3. ILIAS Conference : Zürich : 29 - 30 September 2004

The third conference was hosted by Pädagogische Hochschule Zürich and focused on first experience with ILIAS 3 as well as on didactical and strategical aspects of e-learning in higher education and business.


2. ILIAS Conference : Cologne : 1 - 2 October 2003

The conference was organised by Universität zu Köln and offered parallel sessions for developers and ILIAS users. And a first prototype of the new ILIAS 3 was presented at this event.

1. ILIAS Conference : Hamburg : 5 - 6 September 2002

The first International ILIAS conference took place at the University of Federal Arms in Hamburg (today Helmut Schmidt Universität Hamburg) and gave an overview on how ILIAS is already used in higher education and professional training. It was the first big user meeting on international level.
