New pan-European Certification programme at Toshiba Tec.

Toshiba Tec Germany Imaging Systems GmbH (TGIS) is a division within the Toshiba Cooperation, which deals with the sales and service for multifunctional products (print, scan, copy, fax), barcode printers and POS systems.

About 6.000 employees in Europe take care of the marketing, sales and service of these products in direct and indirect sales channels.

Over the last two years TGIS introduced ILIAS as their new LMS. The selection of the new LMS based on ILIAS was a result of a Six Sigma DMAIC project.

ILIAS is used by the European Training Department as their introductory training support tool.

With the blended learning approach dedicated training material is made available for the trainees to prepare themselves before the essential hands-on training.  During the hands-on training the daily tests are run within ILIAS and it is also used for the training organisation such as price posting and setting the final tests and surveys. The training focus is currently on the multifunctional products.

In 2006 TGIS introduced an online certification system for the European technicians with the name "Skill Enhancement Program (SEP)", which was developed for an existing e-Learning portal. Currently the field service technicians have to qualify within a matrix of nine skill areas and can reach three different certification levels; "Certified“, "Professional" or "Expert".

Having now changed to ILIAS we are going to expand the certification programme in number of levels as well as open it to sales and pre-sales employees. Our partner, Qualitus GmbH, Cologne, applied some modifications to allow us the requested complexity and flexibility.

ILIAS now offers us the possibility to to link learning materials and tests which each other, which was not possible on our previous e-Learning platform. Barriers such as the multi language support of the participating individuals were partially solved by additional tools.

The possibilities, but also the obstacles of a pan European certification programme, will be explained in the presentation.
